Sounds B♭3 on a B♭ trumpet

The valves select a tube length, not a unique pitch. Use your air and embouchure to select the note.

How to read this trumpet chart

Valve 1 is closest to the mouthpiece. Filled circles mean press; empty circles mean release. “Open” means no valves pressed. The chart shows written trumpet notes, not piano notes. On a B♭ trumpet, written C4 sounds B♭3, a whole step lower.

A single valve combination can produce several notes in the harmonic series. Open C4, G4 and C5 use the same valves, but require different air and embouchure. This is why a fingering chart cannot guarantee the correct pitch by itself.

Start with five notes

Practise written C4, D4, E4, F4 and G4: open, 1–3, 1–2, 1, open. Use a comfortable sound; start with the notes your teacher recommends. The full chart includes low notes and the first octave, not the advanced upper register.

Alternative fingerings and tuning

The optional third-valve alternative is shown only for A3, E4 and A4, where Yamaha lists it. Start with the main fingering. Alternatives can change tuning and response; 1–2 and 3 are not interchangeable everywhere. For low C♯4 and D4, ask your teacher about extending the third-valve slide.

Sources and scope

Primary valve combinations F♯3–C5 were visually cross-checked against these two charts on October 20, 2026. The diagrams here are newly drawn; source sheet images are not embedded. Alternate third-valve options are from Yamaha only.

This guide is for standard three-valve B♭ trumpet. It does not cover four-valve piccolo trumpet, alternate tunings or the full professional range. Report a correction.
